Your resume is your first impression — your marketing tool — and often the deciding factor between getting an interview or getting overlooked.
Over the years, I’ve reviewed more than 10,000 resumes as a recruiter, HR professional, and career support specialist. One thing I’ve learned is this: A clear, well-crafted, and ATS-friendly resume opens doors. A confusing or cluttered one closes them.
In this article, I’m sharing the most common mistakes I see on resumes, along with practical tips to help you stand out and present your best professional story.
1. Overly Creative Templates
A clean resume beats a colorful, over-designed one every time. Unless you’re applying to a highly creative or entertainment role, avoid:
- multiple colors
- personal photos
- two-column layouts
- heavy icons
Why: Most Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) struggle with overly designed resumes. A simple black-and-white, one-column format is the safest and most effective for both ATS and human readers.
2. Missing or Incomplete Contact Information
You’d be surprised how many strong resumes have no phone number, no city, or outdated email handles. Make sure you include:
- City & province (no full address needed)
- Phone number
- Professional email (avoid emails that reveal age)
If you can’t be contacted, you can’t be shortlisted.
3. Not Highlighting Relevant Experience
Your resume should be tailored to each role. Focus on:
- relevant skills
- industry-specific keywords
- measurable achievements
If you’re a new graduate or changing industries, highlight transferable skills such as communication, customer service, problem-solving, research, or technical tools.
4. Using an Objective Instead of a Summary (In Most Cases)
Objective statements often take valuable space without adding value. A professional summary is stronger because it gives a quick snapshot of:
- Who you are
- Your experience
- What you bring to the role
However, an objective is still useful if you’re a new grad or transitioning careers — just keep it short and focused.
5. Not Optimizing for ATS
Most employers use ATS before a human sees your resume. To increase your chances:
- Use clean formatting
- Include job-specific keywords
- Avoid copying job descriptions
- Double check spelling and grammar
Your wording should match the job posting — but stay truthful.
6. Including Confidential or Unnecessary Personal Details
Never include:
- passport numbers
- bank information
- full date of birth
- SIN
- marital status
- gender
- religion
Share confidential details only when necessary after receiving an offer.
7. Adding Potential Bias Triggers
Although discrimination is illegal, unconscious bias still exists. Protect yourself by keeping the resume neutral and professional. Leave out:
- photos
- age indicators
- social media links (unless it’s LinkedIn or job-related)
8. Lack of Professional Formatting
A resume should be:
- 1–2 pages maximum
- written in clear bullet points
- easy to skim
- consistent in fonts (one or two max)
- saved as a PDF
Proofread carefully. A polished design shows attention to detail and professionalism.
